The focus of this studio was innovation through an interdisciplinary approach — giving students coming from different design departments the opportunity to work together and share a unique, didactic experience through contemporary perspectives focused on experiential innovation.

My team Atlas Studios consisting of three graphic, three interior, and one industrial designer worked together to develop components for the final design proposal. This proposal consisted of a Spaceport-inspired hotel and a mobile learning/exhibit as the main core elements, along with other additional components.

Vanguard: Beyond the Horizon is the concept our team developed to make all design choices throughout the project. The definition of the word vanguard is “a group of people leading the way in new developments or ideas”. NASA is the perfect example of this word because they have led the way in space exploration and sustainability practices. Their mission is to explore the unknown in air and space, innovate for the benefit of humanity, and inspire the world through discovery. They are the vanguard in these fields and continue to explore beyond the horizon for the betterment of our world. The video above showcases the project in a trailer to introduce people into the Vanguard experience.

Badge Mission Adventure

The badge mission adventure is a gamification aspect of the Vanguard experience meant to encourage guests to explore everything there is to offer. The designs were inspired by NASA's mission patches. Each expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) has a unique patch. Mission patches have been worn by NASA astronauts since 1965. Vanguard badges can be redeemed by completing missions throughout the hotel and surrounding spaces. Progress throughout the adventure can be tracked on the Vanguard phone app. Guests can also access discounts and free prizes when completing different missions.

Mobile Learning Units

The Artemis Experience by Vanguard: Beyond the Horizon is a Mobile Learning Convoy made up of a Blue and a Red Unit designed to bring exciting learning opportunities to communities, schools, fairs, and other events all across the country. The decision to make two units was grounded in the idea that a harmonious space could be created in between the two units, and would invite guests to continue their learning without having to be inside the trailers. This space could be used for NASA employee and guest interaction, for retail, for games, and many other space related activities.

Made in SketchUp

The Blue Unit’s focus is to educate and give an immersive experience. We want to give guests a first-person look at what it would look like to take the same trajectory as astronauts would take on their Artemis missions as they fly to the Moon and later on, Mars. We want to paint a vivid image of what it could be like to settle on the Moon and Mars. We are able to accomplish this by surrounding the guests with massive screens on (almost) all sides of the trailer, while also making them feel as if they are in a safe observation deck of a space ship.

The Blue Unit

The RED Unit

While the Blue Unit chooses to immerse guests visually, the Red Unit continues to teach guests about Artemis, but in a more interactive way. Guests can get up close to the SLS family of rockets and learn about all of its different components, touch and feel the new xEMU space suit as well as the SpaceX Crew Suits and learn about how their work.

Guests can also learn about the Dynetics Lunar Lander and even touch a Moon rock! The ceiling windows are overlaid with a real-time projection of the stars, planets, the ISS and satellites that are currently passing above the location in which the trailers are at.

There is also a chance for guests to create their own exoplanets if they so choose. This mini game allows for customization of the planets surface, atmosphere, core, size, etc, and when you are satisfied with your planet, give it a name and collect it.

After guests explore the trailers, they can stop by the retail section to pick up souvenirs, and posters, keep exploring, take pictures, talk to NASA employees, or wait in line for the mobile learning Artemis experience again!
